Cunene drought combat

Tackling the effects of climate change
We are guaranteeing and overseeing a USD 900 million investment into the Cunene Drought Combat Project to provide access to water and support to local agriculture for thousands of families and farms across the drought–afflicted Cunene region.

Severe drought in the Cunene region causes significant water shortages and affects the health and quality of life for thousands of families. It has a major impact on local agriculture, leading to unemployment, poverty, and mass migration.
We are guaranteeing a USD 900 million investment and implementing a phased drought-combat programme.
This includes constructing dams and chimpacas to ensure water availability in the region.
Unlike most communities affected by drought, the Cunene initiative enables families to farm and keep livestock all year round, without the need to migrate – providing greater food and water security for more than 600,000 families. 20,000+ jobs and 3,000 hectares of irrigated agricultural land are being created, supporting an estimated USD 1 million agro-industrial turnover in the region.
