Challenge

The Águas de Benguela water treatment facilities fell into disrepair, limiting access to water in Angola’s second-most-populated region. Existing infrastructure needs to restore and expand its capacity to ensure quality water production.

Solution

Following our USD 191 million investment guarantee, we launched an extensive rehabilitation programme of equipment, operations, maintenance and training in October 2024. This work is preparing the asset for a Public-Private Partnership.

Impact

This will deliver continuous supply of clean and safe drinking water for 1.5 million people, improving health and quality of life, plus major savings on future health costs (USD 4.3 per person, annually, according to the World Health Organization).
